Warnings from Paramahansa Yogananda one of India's great spiritual masters. One is taking life to gravely and the other is giving spiritual advice to those who have not asked for help. Earth is an awful place and there is no safety here. What should we do? Don't take this life to seriously, overcome delusion by holding on to this one thought. Our whole existence is nothing more than God's motion picture and we are the actors. Act out your part well but do not identify with your role in the movie. All the awful things that can happen in this world can be duplicated in a nightmare. We have all experienced these nightmares. You feel yourself being hit or run over by a car and your pain seems as real as if you were crushed by the wheels of that oncoming car and when you wake up to find out it was only a nightmare you laugh and say, "what a ridiculously stupid dream." Life is just a dream within a dream and when you die and leave your body you will be dreaming you are dead and the suffering some go through at death will have seemed like a nightmare. So lets not be afraid of anything. If you intellectually know that life is really just a dream but you still have not completely realized it that's a sad state of delusion to be trapped in. For more exact information read the article "You Are Dreaming You Are Alive and You Will Dream You Are Dead."
Why attach yourself to the passing dreams of this life. If you hold on to this truth you will eventually become free. Unfortunately the real meaning of truth is not plainly understood by most of us. The real meaning of truth is its exact correspondence with reality making the ending lastingly good. The opposite effect happens when people develop the bad habit of telling little white lies all the time. If you travel this road you will find it difficult to ever be completely truthful in any statement you make.
Those habitual liars never realize the importance of telling the truth it doesn't even dawn on them they are lying, it then becomes impossible for them to see any real truth in any circumstance because their own imagination becomes their truth when a little white lie every now and then helps to get along wonderfully. How disappointing! Realize the difference between truth and fact and be always truthful for there are no harmless lies, avoid them. Do not encourage a pattern or habit of becoming untruthful. Truth can also be harmful sometimes; never reveal distasteful truths or facts that cause pointless suffering to others. Is it ever okay to lie? It is always better to just stay silent, or play dumb than to promote something that will have an evil outcome. In this world of relativity, discrimination has to be our guide. However those of you who think you are qualified to give this or other spiritual advice to friends, co-workers or relatives who have not asked for it must realize it is of no benefit to those unappreciative who would snap at their-would be-spiritual advisor with scorn and cynicism.
People who wallow deeply in worldly gunk are insensitive to the understanding gems of wisdom of the sages who talk about invaluable happiness of keeping the "self" under total control. As it is said never cast your pearls before swine nor give that which is holy unto the dogs, they would doltishly trample on what is cast before them. Attempting to advise or reform low-minded individuals with helpful spiritual counsel will likely be met with sneers of sarcasm. It is advisable not to offer spiritual truths to those who lack self-control, devotion or to one who does not care to hear as you will find out the hard way that obscure people have no intention or wish to transform themselves and ridicule the lofty principles and those who advocate them with laughter. Until the recipient is ready it is better to stay away or remain reserved or your outstretched helping hand be slapped.
